Half my kitchen drawers are gadgets I used once. Here’s what actually gets used constantly versus what just takes up space.
The Essentials
Chef’s knife – one good 8-inch knife handles 90% of cutting tasks. Spend money here.
Cutting boards – wood or plastic, big enough to actually work on. Have at least two.
Cast iron skillet – mine’s from 1970-something, still the best pan I own.
Stainless steel pan – for when you want fond and don’t want to deal with cast iron.
Dutch oven – braising, soups, bread. Versatile enough to justify the space.
Actually Useful Gadgets
Instant-read thermometer – takes guesswork out of meat doneness. Use it constantly.
Microplane – zesting citrus, grating garlic, hard cheeses. Small but irreplaceable.
Kitchen scale – especially for baking. Also for portion control if you care about that.
Bench scraper – scooping, cutting dough, cleaning boards. Simple and useful.
Spider strainer – blanching, frying, pasta. Better than a slotted spoon.
Skip These
Single-purpose gadgets. Avocado slicers, banana cutters, whatever. A knife does all of it.
Cheap knife sets with a dozen knives you’ll never use. Better to have three good ones.
Gadgets solving problems that don’t exist. If you’ve cooked without it, you probably don’t need it.
The Rule
If you can’t think of three uses for it, think twice. Space is limited. Every gadget should earn its spot.
